Numbness / Tingling in Hands or Feet
Many people experience numbness and tingling in their hands and feet at some point in their life. Numbness is a loss of sensation and often accompanied by tingling, a “Pins and needles sensation.” If the symptoms subside within a few minutes, the cause is usually benign. However, if the symptoms persist, for several hours or more this could indicate a serious medical problem that needs to be evaluated by a doctor.
Typically, numbness and tingling is caused by irritation of, or damage to a particular nerve or several nerves. These nerves are the peripheral nerves, (nerves that exit the spinal column and connect to the rest of the body).
When searching for the cause of numbness and tingling in hands and feet you will find a variety of causes from diabetes, circulation issues to multiple sclerosis.
At Divine Spine, our doctors have found that the one AREA that is often missed is a compromise at the peripheral nerves, where they exit the spine. We have found that patients with a spinal subluxation (a joint that is either out of alignment or has restricted motion), also compromise the peripheral nerves at that area. Numbness and tingling in the hands is usually related to a subluxation in the cervical spine, (neck). The same symptoms in the feet can be caused by a subluxation in the lumbar spine, (low back).
If the symptoms persist over several hours or more, or if you have sought answers from your medical doctors
with no results, we strongly recommend that you to come in as soon as possible for a thorough evaluation before the peripheral nerve damage becomes irreversible.
At Divine Spine, we strive to find the root cause of our patient’s numbness and tingling through our comprehensive exam process which includes digital x-rays of the neck and lower back region.
